Prize Purse

The $2.25 million Nokia Sensing XCHALLENGE aimed to stimulate the development of a new generation of health sensors and sensing technologies that can drastically improve the quality, accuracy and ease of monitoring a person’s health. Improvements in these technologies will empower individuals to effortlessly monitor and collect their own real-time health data, providing both consumers and healthcare providers convenient access to critical information whenever and wherever they need it.

Prize Purse

  • A prize purse of $1.125 million was available for each of the two Competitions, for a total of $2.25 million. Each competition offered up to six awards:
  • A $525,000 Grand Prize
  • Up to five Distinguished Awards of $120,000 each

Teams were challenged to create sensing technology developed for any of the principal medical sensing domains, including:


  • • Over $105 million invested in NSXC winning teams
  • • 6 new patents issued to winning teams 
  • • Winning teams have established partnerships with NASA and USAF
  • • Winning teams have commenced multiple clinical trials, including the world’s largest breath-based clinical trial for early cancer detection
  • • Commercial launch of Cordella Heart Failure System (Q3 2018)
  • • Launch of Owlstone Breath Biopsy Kits
  • • Environ selected as supplier to the government of Singapore with large B2G contract
  • • NIH grants for POC tests for drug resistant TB and HPV
