Team Leader Jack Mostow is grateful for work on RoboTutor by over 100 faculty experts, student volunteers, and dedicated staff at Carnegie Mellon University and elsewhere; for its world-leading expertise in reading and math tutors, speech recognition and synthesis, language technologies, cognitive psychology, machine learning, educational data mining, design, and human-computer interaction; and to children and collaborators for field-testing RoboTutor in Tanzania, Jerusalem, and Pittsburgh.

TECH INFORMATION

RoboTutor combines decades of research on the science of learning with advanced language technologies and innovative machine learning tools for data-driven iterative design of educational software to increase learning gains.

ABOUT TEAM LEADER

Jack Mostow is Emeritus Research Professor of Robotics, Machine Learning, Language Technologies, and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his A.B. cum laude in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University and his PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University. In 1992 he founded Project LISTEN, which developed an automated Reading Tutor that listens to children read aloud, winning a United States patent and the Allen Newell Medal of Research Excellence. He has published, collaborated, reviewed, supervised students, or given invited talks in artificial intelligence, children’s reading, computational linguistics, computer science, educational data mining, human-computer interaction, intelligent tutors, learner modeling, machine learning, psychology, robotics, software engineering, speech and language technologies, and statistics. Dr. Mostow now leads the RoboTutor team (www.robotutor.org) in the $15M Global Learning XPRIZE competition to develop an Android tablet app that enables children in developing countries to acquire basic literacy and numeracy without adult assistance.
