Holomic’s story is a great example of the meeting of like minds at the right place and right time, leading to its rather fortuitous creation. Dr. Neven Karlovac, a seasoned executive and entrepreneur, was first introduced to Professor Aydogan Ozcan in 2008 while working with the Institute of Technological Advancement at UCLA. At the time, Dr. Ozcan, a young professor at UCLA, was creating a stir in the biophotonics arena. Ozcan, who grew up in Turkey, was exposed early in life to the challenges of taking advanced medicine to underserved geographies.
The two doctors eventually teamed up to form a company, but with limited funds, development carried on in Karlovac’s garage (who quit his day job to take Ozcan’s inventions to market) with NIH funding. In came Gilbert Hakim, a pioneer in Laboratory Information Systems, founder of SCC Soft Computer, and a noted philanthropist. Hakim, impressed with Ozcan’s potential in Global Health, stepped in as strategic investor. Holomic was founded in 2011 with a mission to commercialize Rapid Diagnostic Reader (HRDR-200), LUCAS (lens-free microscopes) and other advanced photonics-based technologies to benefit developed as well as resource-limited countries globally.
About Team Leader
Onur Mudanyali received BSc and MSc degrees in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 2006 and 2008, respectively. He then joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received his PhD in Electrical Engineering. His main interests of research are high-throughput imaging and sensing, on-chip diagnostics and telemedicine solutions for global health related problems.
He is the recipient of 2012 SPIE Scholarship in Optics and Photonics, 2011 UCLA Tech Forum poster award, International PhD Fellowship of The Council of Higher Education of Turkey (YOK), Graduate Scholarship of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), and Undergraduate Merit Scholarship (ITU). He is the author/co-author of more than 60 peer-reviewed research articles in major scientific journals and conferences and two book chapters.
